    Lasted up until the end of 1898. Ended up catching the attention of Americans because of how politically and economically unstable it seemed, as well as being close to the United States.

    A misterious explosion sank the battleship USS Maine
  • U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution that acknowledged Cuban independence

    President William McKinley was given permission to use any military measures to make sure Cuba achieves independence
  • Congress voted to to to war with Spain
