    U.S.S. Maine Explodes
    Riots broke out in Havana, Cuba, so President William McKinley sent the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba. While anchored in the harbor, the U.S.S. Maine mysterioulsy exploded. Hundreds of people were killed.
  • President McKinley called for Cuban Independence

    Although nobody knew why the U.S.S. Maine exploded, Americans blamed Spain. President McKinley called for Cuban independence and the withdrawl of Spanish forces. Spain refused, and the Spanish-American War began.

  • The War in the Philippines

    The first major battle of the war took place in the Philippine Islands. When the war began, U.S. leaders sent American ships to the Philippines. The U.S. fleet was led by the Commodore George Dewey. They engaged in battle. By that afternoon, Dewey's forces had destroyed the Spanish fleet.
  • The War in the Caribbean

    The War in the Caribbean
    Over 16,000 U.S. soldiers invaded Cuba. They needed to take over San Huan Hill in order to capture Santiago. In July, U.S. troops finally captured the hill.
  • The Spanish-American War ends.

    Days after Americans took San Huan Hill, their ships destroyed Spain's fleet as they tried to escape Santiago. The city soon surrendered, and afterward, U.S. forces took Puerto Rico. They signed a true and the war ended.
