The Road to Revolution

  • British Colonial Acts

    Cause: Britain in debt from French and Indian war so they started taxing the colonists with Sugar, Stamps, and other in order to pay for the debts.
    Event: There are acts placed after the F&I war including the Stamp acts placing taxes on paper items, Tea Act placing taxes on tea, quartering Act to provide housing for soldiers, sugar act taxing on sugar,etc.
    Effect: the colonist were angry so there was something one after the other. The colonists protested. Boston Tea Party was how they protested.
  • The Bacon's Rebellion

    Cause: The price of tobacco was low, high taxes, and the government of Virginia was not providing enough protection.
    Event: Bacon's Rebellion was an armed rebellion by Virginia settlers led by Nathanial Bacon. The rebellion was for overtaking reprisal action for alleged thefts by Native Americans.\
    Effect: Racism increases as slavery become a dominant form of labor, less poor whites willing to emigrate to VA, and as white servants see status rise, black slaves see a decline in their status.
  • The Great Awakening

    Cause:
    - less compassionate about religious beliefs
    -started to question their authority and started coming up with their own liberal ideas
    Event:
    -Great Awakening
    -religious revival that impacted the English colonies.
    -passion for religion was gone
    Effects:
    -Jonathan Edwards spreading the belief of salvation through good works, dependence on God's grace, and the image of Hell
    -George Whitefield's use of pathos to pass on the message of human helplessness
    - people professed conversion
  • The French and Indian War

    Cause: France and Britain wanted control over the Ohio River Valley and Britain moved into the region disrupting trade between the Natives and French.
    Event: A war that decided which nation, Britain to French, would control the northern and eastern parts of North.
    Effect: The British gained a large portion of North America. The Treaty of Paris formally ended the French and Indian War. The British were in a lot of debt which they paid for by increasing taxes on the colonists.
  • The Pontiacs Rebellion

    Cause: The Conquest of Canada in which Indians could not get imported goods from England caused anger with the colonists and in 1763, they planned an attack on some of the colonies.
    Event: An Indian uprising after the French and Indian War, led by the Ottowa chief. They opposed British expansion into the western Ohio Valley and began destroying British forts in the area. The attacks ended when Pontiac was killed.
    Effect: Enforced existing trade laws, political control, and new taxes.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Cause: The French and Indian War caused conflicts between France and Britain over territory in Northern American.
    Event: The Treaty of Paris ended the F&I War between France, Spain, and Britain. It marked the end of the War and the American Revolution.
    Effect: France loses all of its territory in the New World and the British are the new rulers and are in massive debt.
  • The Proclamation of 1763

    Cause: King George III wanted to get the Native Americans on his side after they had sided against him in the seven years war/ French and Indian/ War. Also, it was issued to prevent any conflict between the Natives and the British.
    Event: The proclamation was a law that forbade colonists to settle west of the App. mountains.
    Effect: The colonist couldn't settle west of the Appalachians which made the farmers and land spectators mad. This treaty didn't work as colonists continued to settle.
  • Boston Massacre

    Cause: Many taxes against the colonists followed by British soldiers in their towns.
    Event: The Boston Massacre started as a verbal conflict between colonists and British soldiers escalated to soldiers shooting and killing 5 colonists.
    Effects: More fights broke out in Boston. The colonists became even angrier. All they wanted to do was to be free from British rule.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    Cause: The colonists did not want any taxes on tea which the British government imposed.
    Event: A group of men dressed as Indians raided three British ships in the Boston Harbor and threw their tea cargo in the sea.
    Effect: The British passed the Intolerable Act which was very brutal on the Colonists
  • First Continental Congress

    Cause: It was caused in the response to the British government imposing the Intolerable Acts on the colonists which punished the people of MA for the Boston Tea Party.
    Event: The First Continental Congress secretly brought together representatives from each of the colonies except Georgia to discuss their responses and opinions about the Intolerable Acts.
    Effect: There was more colonial unity, rights for the colonist and stopped trade from the British.
  • Common Sense

    Cause: The colonists wanted to separate from the British but were hesitant.
    Event: A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine that inspired the thirteen colonies to take up arms against the British.
    Effect: Many uneducated people found out what was going on in the political world since Paine wrote in the style theta Colonist were most familiar with. It gave the Colonists the push to start fighting for their beliefs and the colonist started to break away from the British and get their independence.
