  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was a line that divided the nation in half all the states below the line was slave states. All the states above the line was free states. California was above and below the line so they decided to let them vote for it and so they became free.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Gold was disovered in California, they quickly got 60,000 people so they applied for statehood. The problem was that the Missouri compromise line stopped at California. So they became free for the North, but all the slaves that were to escape to the North were to head back down to the South.
  • Kansas/Nebraska Act

    The Kansas/Nebraska Act was said to let Kansas and Nebraska vote whether to be free or slave.

    People from the north try to sneak in and vote to help Kansas become free. They are caught and a riot breaks out, and a lot of people are killed and injured.
  • Sumner Brooks Incident

    The Sumner Brooks incident happened when Sumner gave a speech. Sumner (a Northern Senator) spoke poorly of Butler. The result was that Brooks (Butlers cousin) beat Sumner up with a cane.

    John Brown was an abolitionist. He attempted to lead 21 men to fight at Harpers Ferry Virginia. He felt he was Gods avenging angel.
