Japan Conquers Manchuria
Due to the severe economic problems and the overcrowding on its islands, Japan decides to invade Manchuria, north of Korea. However, the League of Nations took no action against the fact that the Japanese is invading Manchuria. -
Germany Rearms
Hitler becomes elected as the Chancellor of Germany and he immediately begins expanding the German army and air force. He exceeded his limit of army and air forces set out in the Treaty of Versailles. He made the German miltary slogan, "Today Germany, Tomorrow the world!" -
Mussolini Invadies Ethiopia
The Italian Army invades Ethiopia in Africa to expand its territory and to obatin the region's rich oil resources. The League of Nations did not take any action when Mussolini's army invaded Ethiopia. -
Hitler Occupies the Rhineland
The German troops marched into the Rhineland. By the Treaty of Versailles, the German army were unable/forbidden from moving within 50 km of the Rhine River. In the end, no one tried to stop the Germans from disobeying the Treaty of Versailles. -
Germany Annexes Austria
Nazi soldiers took over Austria without a single shot being fired. Other nations make no attempt in trying to stop Hitler's troops advancing into the various regions because they don't want another war occuring. -
Munich Agreement is Signed
Britain and France leaders both meet up with Hitler to sign the Munich Agreement. They decided that Germany will be allowed to have Sudetenland (the northwestern part of Czechoslovakia) because they believe it will save the world from another war. This policy became known as "appeasement" which was just another term for trying to avoid war and letting the other country have what they want. -
Rome-Berlin Axis Pact is Signed
Hitler signs a pact with Mussolini. The pact was used so that they could team up on other countries that were apart of the Allied forces. Mussolini allowed Hitler to tae Austria and other territories in the northern and Central Europe. Hitler promised Mussolini that he could take over southern Europe in exchange, On December 21, 1940, Japans also signed the Axis Pact and joined the Alliance. These countries are also known as the Axis Powers. -
Hitler Occupies Czechoslovakia
Hitler claimed that Sudetendland was his last request for territory, but on March 15, 1939, the Nazi troops occupied all of Czechoslovakia. -
Germany and Soviet Union Sign Non-aggresion Pact
Germany signs a pact with the Soviet Union. The two countries promised they would never fight each other in any wars. They also secrelty agreed to divide Poland between the two. Hitler is now able to plan his moves against France and Britain in the west with no one stopping him. He no longer has to worry about an attack from the Soviet Union on the east. -
Hitler Invades Poland
Hitler demands that the Polish Corridor ( Formerly part of west Prussia and divides Germany) is to be handed back to Germany. Poland refused his demand thus resulting in the Nazis launching a Blitzkrieg (lightning war) on Poland. Lightning wars are wars that are very quick and fast but deadly and creates a huge impact on a country. Poland fell right into the Nazi attack. -
Britain and France Declare War
Britain and France realize there can be no more appeasement because they decided that they need to defend Poland and that Hitler's troops needed to leave immediately but Hitler refused to leave. They declared war on Hitler because of this. This caused World Warr ll to begin. -
Canada Declares War on Germany
Canada decided to join the war against Germany so they can seperate from the United Kingdoms assistance and become their own independant country for war.
