    the "give me liberty or give me death" speech by Patrick Henry was given on march 23 1775 he wrote it so that the people could see that the war is alreay here and if they dont do any thing they willi become slaves. as he said in his speech "Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"

  • Washington crosses the Deleware

    From this site, General George Washington and men of the Continental Army and militia crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 and marched to Trenton, New Jersey.
    There they attacked and defeated Hessian troops quartered in and around the village.
    This surprise attack and victory set the stage for Washington's subsequent victories at the Second Battle of Trenton and Princeton

  • Battle of Germantown

    On October 2nd, Washington conceived a bold plan of attack on Howe's 9,000 troop garrison stationed in Germantown. It called for the simultaneous advance of four different units of troops, moving by night. At dawn, the four columns were to converge not far from General Howe's headquarters and catch the British by surprise.
  • Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania

    Early in December, General Howe tried to launch a surprise attack on the American position. But the British plan had been ferreted out by spies, and the Americans were well prepared for their expedition. On December 5, the British began a probe of the American position in the hills. Three days of non-decisive skirmishing followed, after which the British returned to Philadelphia. It was the last engagement in the campaign of 1777.
  • The Treaty of Alliance

    The Treaty of Alliance between France and the United States was concluded at Paris, February 6, 1778 and ratified by Congress May 4, 1778. The treaty provided for a defensive alliance to aid France should England attack, and that neither France nor the United States would make peace with England until the independence of the United States was recognized. The knowledge of the Alliance came to Washington on May Day, 1778.

    While the state constitutions were being created, the Continental Congress continued to meet as a general political body. Despite being the central government, it was a loose confederation and most significant power was held by the individual states. By 1777 members of Congress realized that they should have some clearly written rules for how they were organized. As a result the Articles of Confederation were drafted and passed by the Congress in November.
