    Roosevelt Makes a Deal with Colombia
    On June 19, 1902, President T. Roosevelt makes a deal of $10 million to Colombia in order to build the Panama Canal. Roosevelt tella Colombia that he will make sure that the U.S. will help them get rid of Colombian rule if they would claim their independence. The U.S. negociates a Panama treaty with Colombia in order to begin the building of the canal. The clash between the U.S. and Colombia breaks out into a war, and lasts only a few hours and the U.S. wins the battle.
  • A New Nation is Born

    A New Nation is Born
    Panama Canal BuildingOn November 3, 1903, a revolt takes place. Some U.S. gunboats wait near the harbor to support the rebels. Some of the U.S. marines land in Colón to prevent the contrary Colombian troops from getting to the city of Panama. American people are alarmed because Roosevelt makes a comment on their "gunboat diplomacy". The Panamanian rebels win the revolt, and finally, a payment of $10 million secured a zone for the canal, and the Nation of Panama is born.

    Panama Treaty is Radified
    On November 6, 1903, two frenchman, Jimmy Carter and Omar Torrijos, sign the treaty for the people to officially begin building the Panama Canal. The treaty said that the U.S. had control over a significant amount of the canal. (10 miles wide across the Isthmus of Panama) The U.S. paid their rent by giving $10 million at the beginning of the building, and from then on, $250,000 a year in rent.

    Finally, on March 3, 1904, The Building of the Panama Canal officially begins. Presidnet Roosevelt ordered the men to , " Make the dirt fly," when they began breaking the ground. During the whole first year in Panana, this mirrored the French Disaster....Americand had poured $128 million into the swamps of Panama, and they begam to think that their money had been wasted.

    Around March of 1904, the Canal experienced many complications. One of the major complications at the canal was that there were so many mountains, the men couldn't work around them to be able to continue the building, this is another time that the builders thought they were going to have to give up on the canal once again. That was agian, $128 million poured into the swapms of Panama.

    On November 11, 1906, Yelow Fever, a very deadly disease caused by mosquitoes, overtook the nation of Panama, wiping out men, hundreds at a time. Finally, Gorgas nearly wiped out every case of Yellow Fever by draining the swamps where mosquitoes lived.

    Finally, after many years of work and many people giving up, the Atlantic and Pacific are finally joined together. This was a delayed due date of when the Panama Canal was originally due to open up for people, but Americans were still happy that they were now able to get across from ocean to ocean from a much quicker route.
