  • The Browns' First Slave Trade Involvment

    The Brown family's first recorded involvment in slave trading came in 1735, when thr brothers' father, Captain James Brown, sent a ship to Africa.
  • The Brown Family's Second Involvement

    The family's next involvement came in 1759, when Nicolas and John joined their Uncle Obadiah and several other Provedence merchants in outfitting another ship.
  • The Sally Sets Sail

    In 1764, the Brown Family's buisness, known as the Nicolas Brown and company, had all or partial owernship in numerous ships, a candle factory, a rope factory, a sugar house, a chocolate house, and two rum distileries, as well as a new iron foundery.
  • Arriving to Africa

    On November 10, 1764, Captain Hopkins and the Sally arrived in West Africa, on the coast of what is now the country of Guinea.
  • The Last Slave

    On August 20, 1765, Cpatian Hopkins bought his ladt slave. In all, he purchesed 196 slaves.
  • Rebelling

    Eight dyas into the Middle Passage, the slaves rose in Rebellion. Hopkins and the crew suppresed the uprising ny firing on the slaves, killing eight and wounding several others.
  • Forgiving Hopkins

    On November 16, 1765, the Brown brothers said to Hopkins," We need not mention how disagreeable the news of your losing...88 slaves is to us and all your friends, but yourself continuing in health is a great satisfaction to us, that we remain cheerful..."
