    John Winthrop and a second group of Puritans arrive and settles the Massachusetts Bay Colony for Religious freedom.
  • John Winthrop is elected governor

    John Winthrop is elected governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
  • Portsmouth's founding

    Portsmouth is officially founded.
  • Roger Williams

    Roger Williams is put on trial for saying that colonists and Native Americans should live in peace and was expelled from Massachusetts Bay.
  • Roger Williams founds Providence

    After being expelled, Roger Williams buys land from Native Americans and founds Providence.
  • Harvard College

    Puritans found Harvard College (Harvard University) to train ministers.
  • Anne Hutchinson

    Anee Hutchinson is put on trial for sedition and is later expelled from Massachusetts Bay.
  • Thomas Hooker founds Hartford

    Thomas Hooker founds Hartford for religious and political freedom. Later in 1637, Hartford becomes part of the Colony of Connecticut. Connecticut was formed for religious and political freedom.
  • Pequot War

    The Pequot War broke out between the colonists and Pequot tribe.
  • The Fundamental Orders

    Connecticut wrote the Fundamental Orders, allowing white, land-owning, men to vote for their leaders.
  • Rhode Island

    Hutchinson joins Williams and under a charter they form Rhode Island for religious and political freedom.
  • King Philips War

    Colonists and the Wamponoag fight over who owns what land. King Philip dies in the war and the colonists win.
  • New Hampshire

    Portsmouth joined with other colonies to form the colony of New Hampshire. They formed New Hampshire for economic opprotunities.
  • Population

    By 1700, more than 90,000 colonists were living in New England.
  • Late 1700's

    By the late 1700's, 1/3 of European ships were made in New England.
  • Groups against slavery

    In the very late 1700's, some groups of colonists thought that slaves were being treated unfairly. They attempted to stop slavery for many years but they never suceeded.
