    The Thought of the Panama Canal
    Panma in 1902 was a province of Columbia. Columbia was offered ten million dollars in cash and twohundred-fifty thousand yearly in rent from Roosevelt to allow the U.S. to build a canal through panama.

    On November 3,1903 a revolt took place. Gunboats from the U.S. waited in the harbor to provide support for the rebels. U.S. Marines landed in Colon to prevent hostile Columbian troops from reaching Panama City. Roosevelt's role in the revolt alarmed americans, criticizing his "gunboat diplomacy".

    The U.S. immeadiately recognized the independent republic of panama. Three days later, a french man acting for panama signed a treaty giving the United States permentant use and control of a 10 mile wide zone across the isthmus of panama. The U.S. agreed to pay $10 millionplus $250,000 a year in rent.

    1904 ,the Americans first year in panama, mirrored the french disaster. The chief engineer John Findaly Wallace, neglected to organize the effort to develope an action plan. The food was putrid, the living conditions abysmal. Political red tape put a strangle hold on apportions. Disease struck and three out of four Americans booked passage home. Engineer Wallace soon followed. The Americans had poured $128 million into swamps of Panama, to little effects.

    Yellow fever and other diseases including malaria spread throughout the making of the panama canal. To prevent disease they began to get ride of brush and drain swamps. For they learned these disease were coming from mosquitos.

    Roosevelt knew many people in Panama disliked Columbia rule. So he secretly told them the U.S. would help if they claimed independence. The U.S. immeadiately recognized the independent nation of panama beginning on november third 1903. Panama signed a treaty giving the U.S. rights to the canal.
