The Lubicon Cree

  • Lubicon left out of Treaty 8

Because of where the Lubicon Cree lived, the treaty commissioners did not go to them for them to sign the treaty. In result, the Lubicon were not recognized as a aboriginal group, so they were not guaranteed land. (This was the event that started the fight for the Lubicon, so that they could be recognized as a group and to have their own land).
  • The Promise for Land

After the government found out that the Lubicon were a group, they promised to give the Lubicon the land they were living on for their reserve. (This was the time that told the Lubicon that the government is "letting them use the governments land", even though it always was the Lubicon's land).
  • Oil was Found

Oil was found on the Lubicon land which then had the government invade the Lubicon area, to then get access to the oil. (This event showed the Lubicon that even if the government "gave them the land", it was still controlled be the government).
  • Lubicon Tried to Fight Back

Lubicon tried to file a caveat which Alberta then turns down, in result the Lubicon take the matter to court. (This, I think, made the Lubicon very angry because when they tried to protect themselves, the government just turns it down).
  • The Changing of Laws

The court ruling was indicated to be in the favor of the Lubicon, then the premier passes a bill that rewrites the rules of caveats before the Lubicon could file in their's. (The Lubicon probably felt discriminated against because at the time of giving the land, the government didn't know about the oil, now they do!).
  • Devastation in the Lubicon Area

Resource exploitation plant explodes. (I think the Lubicon were distressed about the fact that the government was using the Lubicon land for themselves, and when it got destroyed, it affected the natural resources that were used be the Lubicon!)
  • The Threat Against the Lubicon

The Lubicon take the matter to the federal court for judgment on the land. Alberta then declares that the land the Lubicon are living on, be turned into a official hamlet, which then kicks the Lubicon off the land. (The Lubicon probably felt threatened because if they did not obey, they would be fined and there would be a demolition order).
  • The Affects of the Oil Plant

Out of the 21 pregnancies from 1985 to 1986, there were 19 that resulted in miscarriage and stillbirths. (This must have devastated the Lubicon community, to have lost all of those children).
  • A Decision of Human Rights

A Decision from the UN Human Rights Committee declared that the Lubicon cannot achieve any redress in Canada. They also said that Canada was not aloud to do further non-repairable damage to the Lubicon land. (This probably made the Lubicon kind of happy but suddenly changed back to gloom because Canada ignored the order).
  • The Grimshaw Accord

After 14 years from when the Lubicon filed their caveat, the Alberta premier met with the Lubicon Chief and made the Grimshaw Accord. (I think the Lubicon were kind of happy because what the Grimeshaw Accord did is that it gave the Lubicon 243 square acres of land for the reserve).
  • Human Rights Violation

The UN found out that Canada did not listen to them from the last time so Canada then got charged for Human Rights Violation. (I dont think this really affected the Lubicon but if they were I think it would have been kind of rewarding to have someone sort of help them).
  • What Happens Now?

The Alberta government even to this day is exploiting and contaminating the lands near the lubicon people. (To this day the Lubicon are getting sick and having their resources taken away from them).
