    Birth

    Genghis Khan was born in the year 1162 during a period of sporadic warfare.
  • Apr 3, 1171

    Early Childhood

    When he was 9 years old, Temujin was taken to a nearby clan and forced to work for several years, in order to earn a bride.
  • Oct 21, 1173

    Enslaved

    On the way home after working for a neighobring tribe, Temujin was seized by a tribe after his father was poisoned and killed. He was forced to become a slave for approxiamtely five years. He was freed at the age of sixteen.
  • Oct 21, 1178

    Marriage

    At the age of 16, Temujin married Borje, the bride he had earned while working at the neighboring tribe.
  • Oct 21, 1206

    Renamed

    A council of Mongol tribesmen met and declared Temujin to be the "Ocean Ruler of the Universe," or Genghis Khan. This was to be his new name until his death.
  • Oct 22, 1219

    Conquest

    By 1219, Genghis Khan ruled from northern China to the Afghan border, and from Siberia to Tibet.

    Khwarizm Empire

    Genghis Khan generated a trade alliance with the Khwarizm Empire, whic h was very powerful, making it a wise decision. The Khwarizm Empire controlled central Asia from Afghanistan to the Black Sea.

    Succession

    Khan called a meeting with his family to discuss who would be his successor. His third son, Ogodei, became the successor, and eventually he took East Asia. Genghis' second son, Chagatai, took central Asia, and the youngest son, Tolui, took Mongolia proper.

    Legacy

    His sons continued to expand the Mongolia empire. Khan created an egalitarian society, meaning that even the lowest of the social classes could rise to the top if they showed courage in the face of fire. Genghis Khan went from a life of poverty and slavery to a life of plunder and conquering, and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest leaders in history.
