    On July 18, 1918 Nelson Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in the village of Mveza. His mother’s name was Nonqaphi and his father’s name was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa. His father passed away when Nelson was just 12 years old.

    In 1993 Mandela was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace at the Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony at the Oslo City Hall in Norway. He received this award for his work regarding the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime and for laying the foundations for a new democracy for South Africa.

    On May 10, 1994 Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected president. During his presidency he established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, whose purpose was to investigate human rights violations under apartheid.     On December 5, 2013 Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. He was at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg in South Africa and was surrounded by his family. His death was announced by the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma.
