In August, Darwin and the rest of the crew reach Rio Negro, and Darwin explores the Pampas (fertile areas) with 'gauchos' (the locals). He seems to enjoy it.

Darwin witnesses a volcanic eruption and an earthquake at Chile, and seeing the aftermath shook him.

This is where Darwin's fame is centered. He writes about many unique organisms such as the Galapagos Tortoise, Galapagos Marine Iguana, Blue-Footed Boobies, and especially the Finches. The way their beaks varied from island to island fascinated him, and he took several specimens.

On their last trip to South America in August, Darwin discovers even more organisms to put in his specimen book. But, he is homesick.

The Beagle has completed her journey, and has reached home. It was a long journey, especially with 74 people in close quarters, but they all made it.
