    PS Networks

    PS, or packet-switching, networks were developed during this time. The internet relies on packets to transfer data which is then split and goes to separate destinations. This makes it difficult to eavesdrop on messages and allows networks to withstand large scale destruction such as nuclear attacks.

  • NSF Funding

    The NSF began funding the creation of five supercomputing centers at Princeton University, University of California, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Cornell University and the University of Pittsburg.
  • NSFNET

    NSFNET was created with a backbone of 56 Kbps and 5,000 hosts. The 5 supercomputing centers were established. NNTP designed to enhance Usenet news performance over TCP/IP.
  • NSFNET Upgrade

    The networks became congested so the NSFNET was upgraded to T1 (1.544 Mbps).
  • First Web Browser

    First Web Browser
