    The club moved to The Dell, their home stadium until 2001

    Southampton earned promotion to the First Division (now known as the Premier League) for the first time in their history

    Lawrie McMenemy became manager and guided the team to their first major trophy, winning the FA Cup by defeating Manchester United in the final

    Southampton moved to St Mary's Stadium, their new home ground

    Southampton was relegated to the Football League Championship (second tier) after 27 years in the top flight

    Southampton returned to the Premier League after winning promotion from the Championship
