After India became a battlefield during the global struggle between Britain and France, the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763. The Treaty gave the British control over much of India, marking the start of the British empire in India.

The British needed a way to govern the large area of India, so the Regulating Act was passed, creating the office of governor general. This allowed them to exercise political authority over the territory controlled by the East India Tea Company.
