    Dry land farming resulted in the destruction of prairie grasses. Whenever a drought came the over farmed land began to blow away and caused massive clouds of dust. It was so bad that the sky sometimes was dark for days and even well-made homes had thick layers of dust on the furniture.

    Due to the nature of the depression and people struggling without jobs, they didn't have the money for food which caused food riots in different parts of the United States.

    The New Deal Begins

    Roosevelt came up with the New Deal to try to help economic recovery and giving immediate relief to Americans. The New Deal was made up of public work projects, regulations, and financial reforms in attempts to heal the Great Depression. Over 15 new laws are enacted to help fight the depression.
  • Roosevelt calls for a bank holiday where banks are closed.

    The Federal Housing Administration is established.
    This promoted home ownership by providing federal backing of loans.

    The Second New Deal Begins

    The second new deal that was passed by Roosevelt included the social security act and programs to aid tenant farmers and migrant workers. It also passed the Banking Act of 1935 which helped keep initial interest rates low.
  • Works Progress Administration

    This was created to help the mass unemployment of the Great Depression. It put 8.5 million Americans back to work before its end in 1843.
  • World War II and the End of the Great Depression

    Mobilizing the economy for war is thought to have cured the depression. Many people joined the army, and others went to work in well-paying defense jobs.
