The Formation of Earth - A Timeline

  • 100 BCE

    The Big Bang

This supernova supplied our Solar System with all of the materials necessary for life - 14 Billion Years ago.
  • 80 BCE

The nearby star... Formation of the Sun

A nearby star exploded and increased the circular speed of the material storm from the Big Bang. This resulted in the formation of the Sun at the centre of the storm, where all of the mass was concentrated. Smaller concentrations in the storm also formed the planets - 4.6 billion

Earth before it had an atmosphere

Earth was just hot and molten at first. After a while, space’s freezing temperatures cooled Earth down to form a crust on the surface. When Earth continued to cool, volcanoes released gases which formed the early atmosphere, which contained traces of oxygen, along with ammonia, methane, water vapour and carbon dioxide. When the atmosphere became denser, clouds formed, which allowed the earth to rain and stuff. Oceans formed when rain filled the craters left by asteroids that hit Earth

Formation of Earth's Layers and Core

Different materials in space collided to form Earth. The collisions caused Earth to heat up, which melted metal and rocks. Earth’s molten eventually separated into layers, the denser materials are drawn to the centre and the lighter materials are drawn to the surface by gravity. When the material separated, the core was formed of mostly iron, since it was denser than the other material.

    End of Bombardment

Pretty much as soon as Earth was formed, it was abused by asteroids for billions of years - ended around 3.8 billion years ago

    Formation of the Moon

Scientists are still unsure about the formation of the moon, but this is their best-drawn conclusion from their data. Obviously, asteroids were plentiful at the time of Earth’s formations, and they would often strike planets. One the size of Mars hit Earth, and the energy released from the collision melted most of Earth and the asteroid. Material from both bodies was sent out from Earth into orbit, and over time the material smashed together to form the Moon. - 1.5 billion years ago
