Franz and his wife, Spohie, were shot by a nationalist named Gavrilo Princip a member of The Black Hand. -
Austria-Hungary Declares War On Serbia
When Archduke Ferdinand was assinated, Austria-Hungrary blamed the Serbian Government for his assination. -
Germany Invade Belgium
In 1914 before the invasion Belgium was nuetral, and refused to have anything to do with the war.
In August Germany claimed that France was going to invade Belgium to attack Germany, but they later invaded Belgium and byt the end of the year Germany had complete control of Belgium. -
A German Boat Sinks The Lusitania
On May 1, the boat departed from New York and started the journey to Liverpool.
On May 7, the boat was near the coast or Ireland and at 2:10 in the afternoon it was shot down by a torpedo and later by a second attack they eventually ripped the ship apart. -
The First Battle of Somme Begins
This battle began in July and ended in Novemeber and got its named bacuse it took place near The River Somme in France.
The deaths in this battle were extremely high, totaling over 1 million. -
The Zimmermann Note
The Note or Telegram as it is also called was a telegram sent from Arthur Zimmermann, the Foriegn Secratary of the German Empire to the German ambassador in Mexico, Heinrich von Eckardt.
This telegram said that Mexico should make war with the United States -
The U.S. Declares War on Germany
Although the U.S. wanted to stay nuetral, President Wilson belived that in order to keep the world safe from democracy he needed to declare war on Germany.
President Wilson thought that if America went to war it would make her stronger and less humane.
