    Live Journal was a platform created by Brad Fitzpatrick on April 15th 1999 where users could blog as a form of keeping friends updated with their lives and expressing creativity. The company Live Journal was under eventually ended up being sold to a Russian media Company in 2007 and later in December 2016, they relocated it's servers to Russia.

    Friendster was a social networking service based in Mountain View, California. It was founded by Jonathan Abrams and launched in 2003. Friendster allowed it's users to contact other members, maintain those contacts and share online content and media with their contacts. The website was also used for dating and discovering new events, bands and hobbies. Users could even share videos, photos and messages.Later in 2015, the company was sold and became a social gaming site.

    In 2003, seven eUniverse empoyees with friendster accounts saw it's potential and decided to mimic the more popular feautures of it. My space became the most popular social network in the US during 2006. MySpace was a largely known site for musicians and bands, they would use it to connect with fans and show off their talent. MySpace was attracting 115million global visitors per month. MySpace started to die out in April 2008 as more and more social media platforms were being created.

    In Feburary 2004 Facebook was launched by Mark Zuckerberg and his fellow Harvard roommates. Initially, Facebook was limited to only Harvard students but in the following months to come, it would be accessible globall. From then on, it sky rocketed in users to around 2.2 billion in just 14 years.

    Youtube was the first video streaming social media availible online. It was created by Chad Hurley, Steven Chen and Jawed Karim in February 2005. Google later bought the site for $1.65 billion in November 2006. Youtube allows users to upload and share their own videos, like,dislike,view, and share other users videos. As of February 2017, there was more than 400hours of content uploaded per minute and one billion hours of content being watched daily.

    Twitter is a microblogging and social networking service created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams in March 2006. Users post and interact with messages known as a "tweet", you can like,post and retweet tweets. There are 500 million tweets sent out per day, which is 6,000 tweets every second! There are 330 million monthly active users and 145 million users daily!

    Tumblr is very simillar to twitter, it's a microblogging social networking website founded by David Karp in 2007. The service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Many people post videos, photos and use their blogs as a way to tell stories. Lots of people posted "aesthetically" pleasing photos, keeping a theme to their personal blog. In April 2013 the website received more than 13 billion global page views. As of August 2019, Tumblr has over 475 million blogs.

The platform is owned by Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg) and allows users to upload and share stories, videos, and photos. Users can like, comment, and share on others content. Instagram has over 1billion monthly users worldwide with
    8.95 million posts shared per day.The most liked picture on instagram is a picture of an egg, with over 55 million likes.

    Snapchat is a social media app used to messaging and photo sharing between friends. It was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown in 2011. It is generally used amoung the youth (kids 16 and under) which causes a lot of privacy concenrs to parents.You can post videos and photos to whats called 'your story" which lasts 24hours, save photos/videos to your my eyes only or memories. An average of 229 million people use it per day while 4billion snaps are sent out each day.

    Vine was a social network created where users could upload 6-7 second videos/looping clips. The app was offically released on Janurary 24th 2013. By December 2015, the network had over 200million active users. Vine was later discontinued in October 2016, the app was available for users to view old content but no more content was allowed uploaded. People would make crazy videos where they would use the saying "Do it for the vine". Many people gained a social status from vine such as Enya Umazor.

    Musically is an app that was created in april 2014 by Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang.Through Musically users would create 15second to 1 minute long videos of them lip syncing to tracks like songs, movie scenes or some sort of dialog. You could record in different speeds, add filters, and effects. The app allowed users to browse other "musers" profiles and interact with their content. By the end of May 2017, the app had over 200million users.Musically was later sold and in August 2018 became "TikTok"

    Tiktok was originaly an app called musical.ly but later became TikTok on August 2nd 2018 now owned by "ByteDance". Its a platform where users can post 15sec-1min videos of lip syncing, telling a story, playing music and more. You can post the videos publicaly, keep them to yourselves or keep it so only your friends and followers can view them. Many big social media stars and celebrities post content. Tiktok has over 800million daily users worldwide while it's been downloaded over 2billion times
