The Treaty of Rome formed the European Economic Community. The founding member states were 6:Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Luxembourg an the Netherlands.

The member states moved from six to nine. Denmark, Ireland, and the United Kingdom joined.

After more and more policies made to facilitate trade and bring Europe and Europeans closer together, in 1993, the single market became a reality thanks to the Treaty of Maastricht.

With the Treaty of Maastricht was established the single currency of the Union, the euro. The currency came into force in 2002.
