    Fidel and his brother Raul Castro were captured. They were put on trial. Fidel made a famous speech at that trial. His final words at the trial were: "History will absolve me."

    The Cuban Revolution began on July 26, 1953 and ended on January 1, 1959. The war was one of illnesses such as yellow fever. Yellow fever was a major problem back then, because it was unable to be cured.

  • Meeting Che Guevara

    Meeting Che Guevara
    On May 15, 1955; Castro and his brother Raul were released from jail. They then were taken into exile in Mexico. There they met Che Guevara, an Argentine physician.
  • Going to Cuba

    November 25, 1956-
    The Castro brothers and other survivors, including Che Guevara, set sail for Cuba on a yacht called “Granma”. On December 2, 1956, their boat landed in the Oriente Province.

    Castro and Batista used guerilla warfare to fight against each other. Castro ended up winning the wars. Batista was angrier than before.

    Then in May 1958, Batista sent 10,000 men (his entire army) in to destroy Castro’s men. But Castro and his army easily defeated Batista’s men.

    On March 17, 1958, Fidel made a general revolt against the “president”. It was successful.

    The revolt ended up working. On January 1, 1959, Batista and his “followers” fled. Fidel’s supporters took the power to “rule” Cuba.

    Since Castro became the official leader of Cuba after the wars, he went forth to do his plans to help the poor and needy.

    His men celebrated the fleeing of Batista. They partied and had a good time. Everyone else in Cuba celebrated also. Castro and his men had entered Havana on January 8, 1959.
