The Creation of Canada

  • Sir George-Etienne Cartier

    Sir George-Etienne Cartier
    was born on Sept. 6, 1814. He would one day play a huge role to the Confereration of Canada along side John. A. MacDonald. He was added to the lefislature in 1848 and fought hard for French Canadians when representation by population was an issue.

    John. A. MacDonald
    He was the first Prime Minister of Canada, playing a leading role in Conferderation. He entered the legistlature in 1844 and helped to resolve the issues of representation by population for Cartier.

    Political Deadlock: Canada West and Canada East were unable to agree with the other making it nearly impossible for decisions to be made. John A. MacDonald, John Etienne Cartier, and George Brown formed an unlikely alliance to put an end to the political deadlock.

  • The London Conference

    This was where Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scoita and New Brunswick decided to join in Confederation. All that was left to do was to wait for the North American Bill to be passed in Britian.

    On this day Canada became a country. The existing Canada split into Ontario and Quebec. They were joined also by New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. These were the first 4 provinces of Canada. This timeline will introduce you to many of the Provinces and Territories within Canada but not all.     When Britian transfered control the North-Western Territory along with Rupert's land the Northwest Territories were established.
  • British Columbia

    British Columbia
    Before British Columbia became part of Canada there was much debate as to whether they wanted to remain in connection with Britian or join the republic of the United States. British Columbia finally joined with MacDonald's promise of a railway build from Ontario to British Columbia within 10 years.
  • Prince Edward Island

    Prince Edward Island
    While P.E.I. was part of discussion in 1967 they chose not to join. They soon realized this as a mistake as trading between the Dominion created growth which they did not share. MacDonald offered a deal that Canada would take over their railway debt if they joined. In 1873 P.E.I became the seventh province of Canada.

  • Newfoundland and Labrador

    Newfoundland and Labrador
    was the last province to join Canada. Creating the country that we know of today.
