Foreshadows the cold war. Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin meet in Yalta to talk about what they wanted. There was mistrust between the US and Soviet Union leading to the cold war. -
End of World War II
With World War II over the Soviet Union and the US had different views for the world and the different views lead to the Cold War. -
Berlin Blockade begins
The Soviet Union block part of Berlin leading to an airlift by the western powers to aid West Berlin, the first major clash of the Cold War. -
Berlin Blockade Ends
Soviets see the blockade has failed because of the Berlin airlift so the Soviets lifted the blockade. -
China now Communist
This gave communism more land and people. This was scary for the US because they wanted to stop the spread of communism and it seemed like a failure. -
Korean War Begins
The first military action of the Cold War. This made it seem like the Cold War was going to be much bigger than originally thought. -
Korean War Ends
The 38th parallel is mark of the separation of South and North Korea. Half communism half not seemed like a small victory. -
Sputnik Launched
The first satellite to be launched into space and was done by the Soviet Union. This was a technical achievement for the Soviet Union and was done before the US. Seemed like the US was losing. -
Castro takes over Cuba
Established the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere the US feared that communism is getting closer to home. -
Bay of Pigs
The US invades Cuba to try and destroy Cuba’s armed forces ultimately failed. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Nuclear Armed Soviet missiles on Cuban land ready to launch at the US. Disaster was avoided when the US agreed not to invade Cuba if the missiles were removed from Cuba. -
Apollo 11 lands on moon
Most significant event in the space race with the Soviet Union. The soviets may have launched something into space first but the US was the first to the moon. -
SALT I signed
Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. Treaty contained the arms race the US had with the Soviet Union. -
SALT II signed
Second Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty that set more specific regulations on the different missiles. -
Berlin Wall Falls
The Cold War began to thaw and East Berlin changed relations with the West making it free for the people to cross over whenever they felt to do so. Big symbol that the war was ending. -
Cold War Ends
The Soviet Union falls and the cold war is over!
