    the Quebec Padlock law was enforced to stop communist propaganda. The printing of newspapers, documents, pamflets etc. were prohibited. If you were caught violating this law the government put a padlock on the door to your printing room so that you could not get in.

    Spies in Canada
    Igor Gouzenko on 7DaysIgor Gouzenko was part of the Soviet Embassy in Canada. On Spetember 5th he fled the Soviet Embassy in possesion of 109 secret documents about Russian spies. He was worried about what would happen to him for publicizing Russian spies so he went into hiding. Canadian mounties protected him and his family for the following years. It is said that this sparked the Cold War.

    Berlin Blockade BeginsThe Berlin Blockade was a wall built to sepperate western and eastern Berlin to stop the transpertaion involving railway, road and canal access to Allie's section of Berlin. The Soviets were trying to get control of Berlin that they wanted so much. Because of this the allies set up an air transportation unit to transfer goods and food that West Berlin need bably.

They were protecting eachother against the spread of communism that the USSR was trying to inforce. Members of NATO included, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Iceland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxemburg, and the US

    The Korean WarCummunist North Korea supported by China attacked South Korea. The US who was against communism helped support South Korea and eventually the UN got involved. Canada was eventually brought in to the Korean War contributing 250000 soldiers. Canada was also asked to stay behind to make sure battle would not re-break out.

    Canadas Broken DreamThe Avro Arrows was a high tech fighter jet built by Canadians. Its goal was to protect Canadians against Russian Bombers. Many people did not like the idea of this high tech fighter jet and thought it brought dange to Canada so the making of it was cancelled. the cancellation cost 1400 Canadians their jobs.

    DEW Lines toxic legacyNORAD stands for North American Air Defence and was an agreement that Canada and the US would protect eachother. DEW stands for Distant Early Warning and there were several defence areaas in the Northwest Territories. High power radars along the DEW line could pick up enemy air crafts and misiles from 4800km away.

    Canada's part in VietnamFrance and Vietnam were fighting against eachother in the Vietnam war but when a cease fire was called the country of Vietnam split into 2 parts becoming north and south Vietnam. The north part was communist which of course made the US support south Vietnam. They were afraid of the Domino Effect which would spread communism to all Vietnam.
    Draft Dodgers were all the regular people as well as deserters of the army who did not want to fight in Vietnam who fled to Canada to avoid forced enlistment.

    Conflict sparked between GB, France, Isreal, and Egypt when Egypt`s PM nationalized the Suez Canal which was Britian`s, and france`s main source of oil. Isreali army marched to Egypt with support for Britian and France and took over the canal. To get revenge Egypt sunk 40 ships blocking passage through the canal. Britain and France eventually back down returning the canal to Egypt but they had to allow all vessels to travel through it.

    Sputnik gets launchedIn 1957 Soviets launched their first satellite name Sputnik into space. North America thought that the Soviets were getting ready for a nuclear attack and built a bunch of warheads and missiles. US and the Soviets kept building these missiles because they were scared of eachother performing nuclear attacks on one other that they evntually had enough to kill everyone on earth. The United States spent billions of dollars to create a lazer that could destroy ICBM`s from space.

    Pearson wins Nobel Prize During the Suez Crisis Pearson called an emergency over night UN meeting. By the end of the meeting they had decided to create a pact inforcing everyone to immediatly stop shooting. The pact was accepted and 800 Canadian soldiers were sent to patrolll the border. Pearson won a Nobel Prize for this.

    Since the Avro Arrow was cancelled Canada needed somthing else to protect themselves against the soviets. So PM Diefenbake ordered multiple Bomarc Missiles that would be used for protection against the Soviets. But there was a problem because instead of these missiles they were sent warheads which were not allowed on Canadian soil.

To stop the delivery of missiles to Cuba for the Soviets the US created a naval blockade around the island. People in the US got so caught up in the nuclear attack possibilities that they started taking nuclear attack safety drills.

    Henderson has scored for CanadaFor years Canada could not beat any European hockey team in the Olympics. Mostly they couldnt beat Russian but in the 1972 Olympics a series between the 2 was tied at 3 games a peice. The final game went to OT and Henderson scored the game winning goal for Canada ending this losing streak.
