Canada joins the UN (United Nations) in hope of keeping peace and also making peace in the world. -

Communist take control of China
When Mao and the Communists took over China in 1949, after decades of civil war and Japanese occupation, the country was in terrible shape. Roads, railways, farms and factories where in a shocking state of disrepair and treasury was bankrupt after its entire gold reserves were taken away to Taiwan by the Nationalists. -
The Korean War
After being informed of the North Korean invasion, United States President Harry Truman ordered U.S. troops into action under the banner of the United Nations. 15 other countries including Canada rallied to the call for fighting forces to aid the beleaguered Republic of Korea Army. Five other nations offered assistance, but for political expediency opted to supply medical services rather than send their citizens into combat roles. -
Creation of the WARSAW Pact
The Warsaw Pact is the name commonly given to the treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. Each nation pledged for mutual defense between each other if they were to be attacked. -
Vietnam War
At the start of the Vietnam War, Canada was a member of the International Commission for Supervision and Control (ICSC) overseeing the implementation of the Geneva Agreements, and thus attempted to maintain a air of neutrality. However, the Canadian negotiators were strongly on the side of the Americans. One representative (Blair Seaborn) was even involved in secretly exchanging messages between the U.S. and North Vietnam on behalf of the Americans, with the approval of the Canadian government. -

Lester Pearson became a front line player at the United Nations. Working intensely from the end of October into early November 1956, Pearson proposed the world’s first ever peacekeeping force at the UN General Assembly. -

Berlin Wall is Torn Down
The Berlin Wall was built to keep people from Eastern Berlin escaping to the west. It divided families as well as Germany. It was not something the German people ever wanted. When the Soviet Union fell, East Germany made the decision to get rid of the wall. They tore it down and allowed people to travel more or less freely over the border with the West. Within a couple of years, they reunified cash-strapped East Germany with the more prosperous West Germany and they became one nation again
