    Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima Although this was not during the actual Cold War, many say that this bombing was one of the initial starts of the war. The U.S.A released an atomic bomb over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Americans were losing an enormous number of troops and they wanted to end World War II as fast as possible.

    In 1945, Germany was split into four parts, the American, the French, the British, and the Soviet zones. In 1948, America, Britain, and French combined their parts to make West Germany, and they created their own currency. Stalin cut off all rail and roads into west Berlin, the Berlin Blockade. This was solved by airliting all neccesseties in. The blockade ended in May of 1949.

    After World War II, Korea split into two parts, The Republic of Korea (south), and The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (north); the Korean War was between the two. The Republic of Korea was supported by the US and the United Nations. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was supported by The People’s Republic of China and with help from the Soviet Union. The war was fought over whether to be communistic or not. War ended on 7/27/53.

    Soviets bring down a spy plane Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev had announced to the nation's parliament that an American military spy plane had been shot down in Soviet territory on May 5, 1960. Lincoln White, a State Department spokesperson said that the plane was on "weather research" and that the pilot had reported difficulty with his oxygen equipment and that it was determined that the pilot had lost consciousness and had "accidentally violated Soviet air space".

However, it was also the symbolic boundary between democracy and Communism during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall was the division for 28 years kept East Germans from fleeing to the West. The Berlin Wall is considered to have "fallen” in 1989. Border crossing points all along the wall were opened to anyone who wanted to cross on 9 November 1989.

    Germany Reunited In September, 1990, the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union signed a treaty with the East and West German governments relinquishing all the occupation rights they had acquired under the terms of Germany's surrender at the end of World War II. On October 3, 1990, after more than 40 years of division, Germany was reunited as one nation!

    May 1st, 2003 the United States began the remembrance of the Cold War. It is the day that we as Americans commemorate the Cold War Victory Day, and we remember all of those who lost their lives in these wars. Each year several governmental officials help the United States recognize this special day. Also, in Russia they have their own Victory Day which occurs on May 9th.
