This was the first major land battle of the Civil War and really the battle that declared this an official war. Due to the Confederate victory this showed that the war was going to be a lot longer then the quick defeat the Union hoped for.

This was a fight between the Merrimack and Monitor.and on of the most important Naval battles ever fought. It made the old navies useless and made every country have to get ironclad ships instead of their wooden ships. During the Civil War the Union could make more Ironclad ships than the Confederates. General Robert E. Lee starts to take command of most of the Confederate army. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson are the two most efficient and tactical Generals the Confederates have. Until Jackson passes away during the Battle of Chancellorsville.

This Battle, General Robert E. Lee of the Confederates tried a charge against the Union to take pressure of Virginia, known as Pickett's Charge. However, it failed. This loss was a crushing blow to the Confederates and Lee never agained tried a mass charge to invade the North.

The 54th Massachusetts was the first African American group to Battle in the War (on the Union side of course, Confederates would not give guns to African Americans).
