    Abraham Lincoln became the United States 16th President. Lincoln promoted equal rights for African Americans. Soon after Lincoln was nominated to be President, seven southern states seceded.
  • The Confederate States of America was formed

    The Confederate States of America was formed
    Soon after Lincoln was elected President, seven states of the south seceded. Those states included South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. After becoming the Confederate States of America, they elected Jefferson Davis as their President.

    The Civil War began with the spark of the attack on Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter was a federal outpost in Charleston, South Carolina. Here the Confederate troops bombed the outpost of Fort Sumter from three areas in the Charleston Harbor. The Confederates won.

    The battle of Shiloh was fought in Mississippi between Ulysses S. Grant ( Union),General A.S. Johnston( Confederate), and their armies. It was here thate the Union army gained greater control of the Mississippi River Valley. At the end of this battle, Johnston died and the Union Army defeated the Confederates.

    New Orleans was the largest city in the South during the cIvil war. It was also neat the mouth of the Mississippi River. Davis G. Farragut lead the Union to the Forts of Jackson and St. Philip. After isolated by Union ships and being bombarded by motar boats, finally surrendered.

    This battle was fought between George B. McClellan ( Union) and Robert E. Lees' ( Confederate) armies. Robert E. Lee and his army clashed with the Union. This forved the Union ary to retreat from Richmond. These seven days ended with the winning of the Conferderate Army.

    The Second Battle of Bull Run is also known as the Second Battle of Manasses. Here John Pope ( Union) and Andrew Jackson's ( Confederacy) armies fought for three days. After those three days, the Union was forced to retreat in defeat.

    This battle ended with the Union winning.The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day battle of the Civil War. After the battle was over, President Abraham Liconln gave the Emancipation Proclamation.

    Before this battle Lincoln replaced McClellan with General Ambrose Burnside. The Union decided to attack Lee with is divided army but because the Union were delayed in crossing the Rappahannock River, This gave the Confederates time to unite. When the Union came they launched a series of charges, but in the end, the Confederates won.

    For several weeks in 1862, Abraham Lincoln worked intensly, thinking, writing, and re- writing, He finally wrote and finished it. The Emmancipation Proclamation was the order to free the Confederate slaves. However, it did not end slavery right then and there. It only freed slaves that were controlled by the Confederacy. It also did not end slavery in the border states as well.

    Here, after Farragut tried to reach the city above, he left it up to General Grant. General Grant decided to starve the city to surrender. He cut off their city and shelled it repeatidly. After starving for so long and starting to eat horses, rats and dogs, the Conferderate Army surrendered to the Union Army.

    The Union won this battle. The Battle of Gettysburg was a key battle that finally turned the tide against the Confederates. This battle also ended the South's search for foriegn influence in the was. In the end when the battle was fought and over, the Gettysburg Address was soon given.

    West Virginia becomes the 35th stated to be admitted into the Union. West Virginia became a key Civil War border state. Also, it was the only state to succeed from a Confederate State.( Virginia)

    The seige of Petersburg was a nine month campaign of trench warfare, ending in March of 1865. Petersburg was a crucial supply line for the Confederate army, After nine months of battle, The Union army finally defeated the Confederates.

    Before Abraham Lincoln was elected President, he ran against democratic, George B. McClellan. Lincoln, however in the end won with 400,000 poular votes and easily secured an electoral majority. President Lincoln would only see just a few weeks of his reelection before he was assassination.

    In April, Lee and his amry was surrounded by the Union demanding their surrneder. After trying escape and failing, General Lee, decided to meet with Ulysses. With this meeting at the Courthouse, General Lee surrendered to the Union. This ended the war with the signing of surrender documents.

    The Assassination of Abrahaham Lincoln
    President Lincoln, on Friday April 14, 1865 went to a theatre to watch a performance, Little did he know, he would never leave that theatre alive. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilks Booth, who shot him in the head. Lincoln's assassination occured just as the CDivil War was coming to a close.
