    (Confederate) Gerneral Thomas J. Jackson. The Union and Confederate forces both attack the other’s left flank with the majority of their armies. Then the confederates realized the Union army’s plan and moved forces to meet the attack upon their left flank. Yet they were lucky enough to get troops on the Union right side to overrun that flank leading to a disorderly retreat to the North. It was victory to the South in the end.

    When George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign was a success, Lincoln and Edwin Stanton had agreed to close the recruitment offices in the north. Then Lee got Joe Johnston replaced as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and aggressively pursued the Army of the Potomac as it moved back from position down Virginia's Lower Peninsula. Lincoln and Stanton had to then admit they were wrong and re-open the offices.

The Victory known in the South as the Second Battle of Manasses, yet later Lee and McClellan would soon face off in the most bloodiest day of the Civil War yet.

President Lincoln saw the importantance of this and issued the famous Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862.The end of the battle was not clear but the North did win a strategic advantage. 23,100 casualties.

    Morn than 180,000 African American volunteers had served in the Union military. Then the Confederacy had considered drafting slaves and free blacks in 1863 & 1864, but most of the Southerners opposed the enlistment of African Americans.

Yet even after the fact the troops still faceed prejudice and were given unskilled tasks as if they were servents . It took a three year effort to get equal pay yet even then black soldiers knew that if caputred they would be murderd. Nevertheless black soldiers still supported the Union in hundreds of battles and some 70,000 lost their lives.

    George Meade had won the largest and most costly battle in American history, and fought on the farms and hillsides of southern Pennsylvania. The Union victory ended Lee's belief that a single massive victory would defeat the Army of the Potomac.

    This event was when Lincoln realized early in the war that control of the Mississippi was a major goal of the Western forces. Ulysses S. Grant had delivered the city when the Army of Mississippi surrendered after a prolonged siege. In response Lincoln stated "I have found the man who can win this war."

    After the worst defeat of any United States army at Chickamauga Lincoln had gathered three of his best generals Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Joseph Hooker to Chattanooga. Six weeks later Grant broke out of the city, drove the Confederate Army into Georgia, and began preparing for the Spring campaigns.

Feeling that no additional advantage could be had by continuing the battle, Grant elected to move around Lee's right flank towards Spotsylvania Court House where the fighting would continue on May 8. Union losses in the battle was around 17,666, while Lee's was 11,000.

    In this Battle Grant decided to disconnect and continue his overland campaign towards Richmond. However, each of the successive battles that Grant met on this advance resulted in huge casualties earning Grant the nickname ‘Butcher Grant’ The result of this battle wasn't clear but 30,000 casualties of which 18,000 were Union soldiers.

Lee's final major victory, Cold Harbor led to an increase in anti-war sentiment in the North and criticisms of Grant's leadership. With the failure of the assault, Grant remained in place at Cold Harbor until June 12 when he moved
