David becomes king of Israel when he is 30 years old. Jerusalem is chosen as the capital. David brings all tribes together during his reign.

David’s son Solomon becomes king of Israel. He builds a great Temple of God in Jerusalem. The temple becomes the center of religious life and a symbol of their faith.

Solomon dies. Israel splits into two kingdoms called Judah and Israel due to conflicts. People in Judah are known as Jews.

Babylonians conquered Judah and enslave the people. They destroy Solomon’s Temple and capture Jerusalem.

Persians conquered Chaldeans. They allowed Jews to go to Jerusalem. Some moved to different parts of Persian Empire. Spreading of Jews outside of Judah and Israel is called the Diaspora.

Maccabees, a Jewish family, led a revolt. They were tired of foreign rule. The revolt was successful and the Jews were able to rule their own kingdom for a few more years.

The Jews are conquered by Romans. Taxes burden people. Romans had bo respect for the Jewish religion.

The Jews revolt. They are led by the Zealots, a very rebellious group of Jews. They were able to convince others to rebel against the Romans.

Romans demolish the Second Temple located in Jerusalem. Roman soldiers remove valuable objects and set them on fire. Jewish fighters defend their temple against the Roman soldiers but they were defeated.

Romans capture the last of the Zealots in Masada. The Jewish revolt ends.

After the Jews rebel a second time, Romans keep them from living in Jerusalem. Roman officials proclaimed any Jew in or near Jerusalem would be killed. As a result, more Jewish people migrate to the Mediterranean region.
