It was 25 miles southwest of Washington.The union troops drove the Confederates back, but the Confederates got more troops and pushed the Union back. The Confederates were led by General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The idea of a quick end to the war was gone. -

General Lee had been advancing to southern Pennsylvania, and the sides started a battle in the town of Gettysburg. The Confederates were pushing the Union back, but the Union fought hard the next day and started pushing the Confederates back. General George Pickett was ordered by Lee to send his troops to attack on July 3. Most of his 15,000 men were killed. Lincols said the Union was winning by giving the Gettysburg Address. -

Lincols had placed Grant in command of all Union activities, so he fought Lee causing Lee's supplies to run low quickly. General William Tecumseh had capture Atalnta, Georgia in September 1964. Continued through Georgia and the Carolinas. Grant broke through Lees defences in 1865, causing Lee to surrender. He surrendered in Appomattox Courthouse. 620,000 people were killed during the war.
