The Acts

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Stopped the Colonist from expanding westward in the land acquired from the French. The colonists did not Like this proclamation and believed that it was enacted in order to remain under the control of Great Britain.
  • Sugar Act

    Placed to tax the trade of sugar and molasses which is a dark, thick syrup that comes from England. The colonies feared that the act would increase the price of rum and protested.
  • Currency Act

    The act prohibited the creating of new currency or reissue of existing currency. The colonists reacted in protest with the slogan "No Taxation Without Representation".
  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was and act imposed by the Parliament which placed taxes on printed materials which required the colonies to pay tax to help pay the debts that Britain was in. The colonists hated the Stamp Act since it violated their rights as Englishmen which made the start the boycott.
  • Quartering Act 1765

    The act required colonists to shelter and house soldiers in barracks from the colonists. If the barracks were to small then they were to be sheltered in other places such as ale houses, local inns, or victualing houses. The colonists were angry because not only did they have to accept strangers in their home but they were also being taxed to pay for provisions and barracks for the soldiers.
  • Declaration Act

    The Declaration Act was an act imposed by the British Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act. The colonists were forced to help pay off the debts of Great Britain from the aftermaths of the French and Indian Wars which made the colonies unpleased since the Declaration Act was the same as the Stamp Act as it keep the same taxation on the colonists.
  • Townshend Act

    The act taxed goods that were imported into the colonies. The colonies started Boycotts of British goods in order to get Parliament to repeal the act.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre was a chaotic, bloody slaughter which began from one colonists and a British soldier. This was the colonist's rebellion to all of acts and taxation that has been imposed on them that requires them to help pay off the debts of Great Britain.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The colonists, disguised as Native Americans, dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor. The British were very angered by this action and it is then that they passed the Intolerable acts.
  • Quartering Act 1774

    This Quartering Act, unlike the one of 1765, was to allow royal governors to be able to find buildings to be able to house British soldiers. This did not please the colonists since it was a violation of the local authority.
  • Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable acts were a group of acts enacted onto the colonists as a response to the Boston Tea party. They included the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act. The colonists responded by holding their First Continental Congress to discuss how to approach the British.
  • Quebec Act

    The Quebec Act allowed the French to cover the area to the Mississippi River and to the Ohio River which would give the Catholic Church a privilege there. The colonists responded with fear since they feared Catholicism.
