Although 3D printing already exists, using the additive process, it is still largely expensive. A layer of material is sprayed, then it gets zapped with an electron beam, then extra dust particles are sprayed off, and the additive process continues. Engineers at Oak Ridge believe that it may be less expensive and better by 2015. The robotic arm feature in the picture was made using a 3D printer.
