Technology History

  • First programmable computer

    First programmable computer
The Z1 was created by German Konrad Zuse in his parents' living room between 1936 and 1938. It is considered to be the first electro-mechanical binary programmable computer, and the first really functional modern computer, used Boolean logic and binary floating point numbers.
  • Z2

A mechanical and relay computer created by Konrad Zuse . It was an improvement on the Z1, using the same mechanical memory but replacing the arithmetic and control logic with electrical relay circuits. Photographs and plans for the Z2 were destroyed by the Allied bombing during World War II. In contrast to the Z1, the Z2 used 16-bit fixed-point arithmetic instead of 22-bit floating point.
  • Z3

    Z3
The Z3 was an electromechanical computer designed by Konrad Zuse. It was the world's first working programmable, fully automatic digital computer. The Z3 was completed in Berlin in 1941.

  • Phototypesetting

    Phototypesetting
Phototypesetting machines project characters onto film for offset printing. In 1949 the Photon Corporation in Cambridge, Mass. developed equipment based on the Lumitype of Rene Higonnet and Louis Moyroud. The Lumitype-Photon was first used to set a complete published book in 1953, and for newspaper work in 1954

  • Z4

    Z4
The world's first commercial digital computer, designed by German engineer Konrad Zuse and built by his company Zuse Apparatebau between 1942 and 1945. The Z4 was Zuse's final target for the Z3 design, and like it, was an electromechanical machine.

  • ARPANET

    ARPANET
The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network was an early packet switching network and the first network to implement the protocol suite TCP/IP.

  • The computer mouse

    The computer mouse
Invented and developed by Douglas Engelbart, with the assistance of Bill English, during the 1960's and was patented on November 17, 1970.
  • First Mobile Phone

    First Mobile Phone
Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment, placing a call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs. The prototype handheld phone used by Dr. Cooper weighed 1.1 kg and measured 23 cm long, 13 cm deep and 4.45 cm wide.
  • Altair 8800

    Altair 8800
Altair 8800 is a microcomputer designed in 1974 by MITS and created by Henry Edward Roberts. Altair 8800 was the first (and last) Computer Editor of Popular Electronics magazine.
  • Osborne 1

    Osborne 1
The first commercially successful portable microcomputer, released by Osborne Computer Corporation. It weighed 10.7 kg (24.5 lb), cost $1,795 US, and ran the CP/M 2.2 operating system. Powered directly from a mains socket as it had no on-board battery, though it was still classed as a portable device as it could be packed away and transported by hand to another location.

  • First Laptop

    First Laptop
The first machine that looked like today's laptops—flat screen in a clamshell design over the keyboard—was the GRiD Compass. British designer Bill Moggridge created it in 1979, and it was actually manufactured in 1982.

  • World Wide Web

    World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989, about 20 years after the first connection was established over what is today known as the Internet. At the time, Tim was a software engineer at CERN, the large particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland.

  • Wi-Fi

    Wi-Fi
NCR Corporation with AT&T Corporation invented the precursor to 802.11, intended for use in cashier systems. The first wireless products were under the name WaveLAN. They are the ones credited to inventing Wi-Fi.
  • Mosaic

    Mosaic
Marc Andreessen and his team invented Mosaic (original NCSA page), the first popular Web browser, which greatly helped spread use and knowledge of the web across the world.
