    Brian Mulroney's Early Life
    Martin Brian Mulroney was born in Baie-Comeau, Quebec. Baie-Comeau is located 400 kilometres northeast of Quebec City on the shores of the St.Lawrence River. He is the son of Irish Canadian Cathloic parents. His father, Ben, was the town's chief electrician while his mother, Irene, stayed at home (Brian Mulroney: The boy from Baie Comeau).

  • Brain Mulroney's landslide victory

    In the 1984 federal election Mulroney promised to pump up the economy, improve ties between Canada and the United States and work toward a better relationship between provincial and federal governments. Consequently, Mulroney wins a record 211 seats out of 282 seats in the election. This race against Liberal leader, John Turner resulted in the largest victory in Canadian Federal electoral history and made Mulroney Prime Minster (Brian Mulroney’s stunning landslide victory in 1984).

    The ICA was one of the first acts of Brian Mulroney's newly elected Progressive Conservative government, receiving royal assent on 20 June 1985. The Foreign Investment Review Agency (FIRA) which was set up by Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government to limit increasing US ownership of Canadian business, was dismantled by the passage of ICA.     Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement
    In 1987, both countries agreed to the Canada-United States FTA. However, it was officially brought into force on January 1, 1989. This agreement helped establish a strong trading relationship between the two countries. It also eliminated tariffs, reduced non-trade barriers, and was among the first trade agreements to include services and goods. It also included a dispute settlement mechanism for the fair and expeditious resolution of trade disputes (Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement).

    The Canada-Untied States FTA was later replaced with the North American Free Trade Agreement. Mulroney negotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement with U.S. President George Bush and Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari; the three reached a preliminary agreement in August 1992, and it was signed on December 17 of that same year. However, it didn't come into effect until January 1st 1994 (Pettigrew, Ian).
