Task 2 History Timeline

  • Congress passes the 1st Civil Rights Act

    First United States federal law to define citizenship and that all citizens are equally protected under the law. Extended the rights that were listed from the Bill of Rights to all former enslaved people. Ratified 1870.
  • 14th Amendment

    Granted citizenship to all people born in the United States including former slaves. Ratified July 9, 1868
  • 15th Amendment

    Granted African American men the right to vote. Ratified February 3, 1870.
  • Women's Suffrage Amendment Proposed

    Gave women the right to vote, first proposed in congress in 1878 but wasn't passed until August 26, 1920.
  • Plessy vs Ferguson

    U.S. Supreme Court case where the Supreme Court allowed for separate but equal accommodations despite the laws passed. Ended May 18, 1896.
  • The NAACP is founded

    The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is a civil rights organization that was formed in New York.
  • 19th Amendment

    Gave women the right to vote, first proposed in congress in 1878 but wasn't passed until August 26, 1920. Ratified after 41 years
  • Shelley vs Kraemer

    Civil Rights Ruling that stated that courts could not deny the purchase or sale of real estates based on race.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Supreme Court ruling that rule that dividing children in public schools was unconstitutional. Ended May 17, 1954.
  • Rosa Parks refusal of giving up her seat

    Rosa Parks was arrested on December 1, 1955 after refusing to give up her seat for a white passenger.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Passed on July 2, 1964 that prohibited discrimination in public places, made it illegal for discrimination in workplaces, and integrated schools and public areas.
  • National Organization of Women formed

    The National Organization of Woman (NOW) was formed on July 30, 1966 as a women's activist group that wanted to end sex discrimination.
  • Green vs County School Board of New Kent County

    Supreme Court case that occured on May 27, 1968 that said that the 'freedom of choice' to segregate the school was unconstitutional which ruled that the New Kent county school board to create a new plan.
  • Swann vs Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education

    Supreme Court case that took place on April 20, 1971. Aimed to speed up the process of integrating public schools.
  • Proposition 209 - California

    A California ballot proposition that amended the state constitution to say that the state could not consider race, sex, or ethnicity when considering public employment.
