  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was a law passed by parliament that placed a tax on printed materials such as legal documents,newspapers,and playing cards.The colonists thought that it was unfair because they did not have a say in goverment.Their battle cry was:"No taxation without representation"!
  • Sons of Liberty

    The Sons of Liberty were a group (led by Samuel Adams) that led protests against the new tax.They burned stamps and threatened stamp agents-the people who were hired to collect the stamp taxes.

  • The Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts were laws that placed a tax on imported goods such as paper,wool,tea and other goods.The British leaders' goal was to show the colonists who was in charge.The colonists' reaction was bad.They decided to boycott British imports.A boycott is a refusal to buy goods.
  • Daughters of Liberty

    The Daughters of Liberty was a group(led by Marcy Otis Warren) that helped the boycott.To help the boycott,the daughters began weaving cloth that could be used instead of British wool.Mercy Otis Warren felt determined because she wrote "We'll quit the useless vanities(expensive items)of life.The daughters of liberty made their own tea(made out of berries and herbs)rather than buying British tea.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre was an event on March 5,1770.It all started when the colonists began insulting the soldiers and throwing snow balls,icicles,and oyster shells at them.The soldiers got angry and started a riot.They accidentally fired their guns at the colonists.
    Afterwards,five of the colonists died.This upset the colonists even more.Then the soldiers went to court.
  • Commitees of Correspondence

    The Commitees of Correspondence was an event formed in towns all over the 13 colonies.Members of these correponded(or wrote to each other)about local events.The letters were delivered by"express riders"on fast horses.
  • Boston Tea Party

    In late 1773,three ships(carrying tea) sailed into Boston Harbor.
    On December 16, the Sons of Liberty disguised themselves as Mohawks.They rowed out to the British ships shouting"Boston Harbor,a teapot tonight!"They boarded the ships,chopped open the chests of tea with axes,and dumped the tea into the harbor.This became known as the Boston Tea Party.Soon colonists were singing a new song"Rally Mohawks!Bring out your axes and tell King George,we'll pay no taxes!"
  • The 1st Continental Congress

    The Continental Congress was a meeting with every colony except Georgia.George Washington was the leader at the meeting.At the meeting,they agreed to stop all trade with Britian until the Intolerable Acts were stopped.They also agreed that every colony should start militias.All they wanted was to have a peaceful life.
  • Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts were laws made by the colonists.It was made to punish the people from Boston for destroying the tea.The affects were-the British soldiers were sent back,the colonists had to house and feed the soldiers,Massachusetts was ruled by a British general named Thomas Gage,the Boston port was closed,and the colonists had to take sides with the Boston and Britian.Colonists who opposed British rule were known as Patriots.
