Splatoon
The first splatoon game was reliced the May 28 2015 on the Wii U which was a big succes for that console. Though it was pretty new, it caught a lot of peoples attenition, since it had a lot of unique caracteristics, especially the fact that it was a family friendly third person shooter. -

Splatfest and new content
Splatoon started of pretty small, with only 5 stages and only a few weapons, but slowly started to grow. They also added a two new rank modes, called tower control and rainmaker. But the best thing they added were the "splatfests", which consists on picking a team and winning the most games with the team you've picked (they last 24h, there was 1 every month). They ran for about a year and ended with a special 48h worldwide splatfest which set the foudations for the second game. -

Squid sisters stories
Between the last splatfest and Splatoon 2, they updated Splatoon's official website with a little story between Callie and Marie, the 2 stage anouncers, to set up the story for Splatoon 2. Though it wasn't a new game or anything close to that, it was enough to keep fans ocupied. Then, the presentation trailer for splatoon 2, intoducing quite a lot of new weapons, stages and a lot more. -

Splatoon 2
Splatoon 2 was relesed the 21 of July 2017 with a few new stages, a new single player and a new weapon tipe: the dualies. But the biggest inprovment of them all was the new game mode called Salmon Run. Though these improvments were nice, people started to say it didn't change much of the first game. But Nintendo kept adding new content, including a new ranked mode called Clam Blitz, a new weapon tipe called the Splatbrella, many new stages, new sub weapons and three new specials. -

Splatoon 2 splatfests and new content
Just like the first game, they add new content, now every month. They added a new ranked mode, called clam blitz; a lot of stages, some new and some old; a lot of new music and a lot of new weapons, for example the kensa collection. These new weapons also added new subs and specials. The've also been having a lot of splatfest, some being about real life and others being really random (like TP from infront or TP from behind). The standouts are the 48h splatfests, like Squid vs Octo. -

Octo expansion
The Splatoon 2 crew had been showing bits and pieces for some new DLC consisting of a harder solo mode, since a lot of people were complaning that the normal one was to easy, which, being honest, it was. This new expansion also contains something that's also been requested a lot: playable octolings. It was relesed out of nowhere and was a big succes, in a lot of peoples eyes one of the only DLCs to be worth geting from the Nintendo Switch so far. It contained more lore and a lot more content. -

Splatoon 2 currently
At this point in time the are only a few splatfests left till they stop happening, since they said the'll go on for 2 years after the games relese, so that means they are only 6 left.
The splatoon community is quite big considering the fact the first game only came out less than 4 years ago. It's quite well known, and now Inkling (the character you play in Splatoon) is even playable in the newest Super Smash Bros. game!
The game is really unigue and the community will only continue to grow.
