  • American Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb

    American Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb
    The oldest school for the deaf was created in West Hartford, Connecticut. It was founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Dr. Mason Cogswell, and Laurent Clerc. One year after opening, it became funded by the state.
  • Vineland Training School

    Vineland Training School
    Vineland Training School was opened with the purpose of teaching those with developmental disabilities so they could live independently.
  • Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)

    Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that separate schools for black and white children are unequal and unconstitutional. The decision if Brown v. Board of Education repealed a previous U.S. Supreme Court ruling that separate is equal. Brown v. Board of Education is a landmark case not just within the realm of U.S. education. It will spark change for decades to come.

  • Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    This prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs that are owned and operated by federal agencies, as well as programs receiving federal financial support.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975

  • IDEA

    IDEA
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was created to replace Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975. The overall goal of IDEA is to provide children with disabilities with the same educational opportunities as those who do not have disabilities​.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is the most current update to the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It is a federal law that provides money for extra educational assistance for poor children in return for improvements in their academic progress. The goal of the law was that all students would be ranked as "proficient​" in math and reading by 2014.

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004
    ​IDEA has been changed several times since it was initially create. In 2004, changes were made to make sure that children with disabilities were provided an education that meets their needs and prepares them for what the future may hold. It was also amended to protect the rights of both children with disabilities and their parents.
