    The Watergate Scandal

    The series of events which exposed President Nixon's administration's abuses of power. Most significantly, and what led to the investigation, was when the DNC headquarters were broken into by burglars connected to Nixon's campaign for reelection.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act - Section 504

    Outlined that students identified as having a disability cannot be discriminated against/excluded from federally financed programs. Section 504 specifically ensures that people with disabilities are provided the same opportunities as those who are able-bodied and protects them from being denied those opportunities.
  • Educational Amendments Act

    Wherein Federal spending was increased for students with disabilities and gifted/talented students. Additionally, it established that families of students with disabilities could access their student's records.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Made it required that students with disabilities have the right to a "free and appropriate public education" (FAPE), along with at least one free meal a day at school. Furthermore, it introduced the idea of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and outlined what defines a Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
  • First Artificial Heart Transplant

    Barney Clark was the first person to receive a permanent artificial heart transplant in Utah. The first artificial heart was made in 1938, over four decades prior.
  • Titanic Wreckage Found

    Found 13,000 feet below sea level, the wreckage of the sunken ship The Titanic was found in the North Atlantic Sea. The ship sunk in 1912, with nearly 15 hundred dying in the disaster.
  • Education of Handicapped Act Amendments

    Expanded previous legislature to give children with disabilities between the ages of 3 and 5 access to free and appropriate education. Additionally, it allowed early intervention programs for disabilities that focus on children younger than 3 years old.
  • Black Monday

    The Stock Market Crash of 1987, also called Black Monday, was one of the most historically significant stock market crashes to ever occur. It is considered one of the worst (if not, the worst) single-day stock market crashes of the 20th century.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Protection against discrimination of people with disabilities, especially in regard to employment and access to government programs. Focused also on providing equal opportunity to those with disabilities in the workforce, for transportation, and other services.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): '90

    Expanded protocol for identifying students with disabilities. Focused on public school districts identifying children with disabilities, not just in their own schools but in private and homeschooled environments as well. Furthermore, ensured that these identified students were able to get a free and appropriate education, in addition to access to an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • OJ Simpson Trial

    Former American football player OJ Simpson was tried for the murder of his wife and her friend from 1994. His trial was famously televised. The trial's jury found him not guilty.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): '97

    Additional program expansion of IDEA. Main points from this Act include that general education teachers would be mandated to be a part of a student's IEP team, rather than separate from the process. Additionally, students with disabilities were to take state tests, would be protected from expulsion on account of their disability, and would have Behavior Management Plans.
  • IDEA Improvement Act (IDEIA)

    This improvement Act helped early intervention services for students with disabilities by increasing its funding. Teachers seeking special education licensure would also need to undergo more vigorous training to be certified under this Act. Furthermore, Response to Intervention (RTI) was implemented in schools.
