  • National College for the Deaf and Dumb

    A school was created for students that were disabled blind and deaf, signed by Abraham Lincoln
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    The segregation of children in schools is no longer allowed, they must integrate.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    This was for the funding of education
  • Mills Vs. Board of Education

  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    This law protected students from being discriminated because of their disiblity.
  • Education for all handicapped children act

    Education for all handicapped children act
    Individuals with Disability education act was created, meaning all children had to be given an equal opportunity to attend school. The "zero reject" was put into place. Before this amendment was created studnts could be rejected.
  • IDEA

    It took the government until 1977, to fully use the law and make the students equal.

    IFSP
    Individualized family service plan was enacted. This means that toddlers and infants were now protected under IDEA, the children could begin to recieve care starting at birth. For example: children placed in NICU, premature birth, physical disabilities shown, substance abuse parents.

    The IDEA made a point to stop using handicapped and use the term disabled, always put the student first, never the disability. TBI and Autism were given categories.
  • 1990 Individualized transition plan

    The individual transition plan was put into place so that students were given a plan of what to do when they graduate highschool. This plan goes into effect when the child turns 14, and fully effective at 16.
  • Disipline Law

    Disabled children could be suspended for up to ten days, response to no manifestation added the stipulation for considering the disability and the student as a whole. The student was evaluated based on the behavioral issue. If the student did anything illegal, they were arrested and handled with the law. ADD/ADHD were added to OHI - prior 504 plan a rehabilitation act.

    No Child Left behind was originally created, to get students to perform on grade level.

    The children needed to be tested on grade level, they were to be proficient in math and english, making some sort of improvement. The transition plans had to be adequate. IDEA was changed to IDEIA and RTI was put into place.
  • Inclusion

    Students are now being included into general ed classes with non special ed students.
