  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    This case ended legal segregation in public schools. It led the way to our country's realization that all people, regardless of race, gender, disability etc deserved an public education.
  • ESEA Act

    The ESEA Act or Elementary Secondary Education Act was passed by Congress in 1965. It was devoted to providing financial assistance to those in need, including special education services.
  • Mills Vs. D.C. Board of Education

    This case ended with the court system declaring that children with disabilites have just as much equal right as children without disabilities to an education. This decision helped lead us to pass Section 504 of the Rehabilitiation Act of 1973, as well as the EAHCA (Education for All Handicapped Children Act).
  • Rehabilitation Act of 1973/Section 504

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was the first civil rights law to be enacted on behalf of students with disabilities. It prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities who are in programs that are federally funded.
  • FERPA

    The FERPA, or Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, is a Federal Law that was passed to ensure the privacy os student school record and outline parental rights.
  • Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District vs. Rowley

    In this case, the Supreme Court established the requirements for an FAPE, or free appropriate public education. In this case, the court ruled that schools achieve this by providing adequate support services.
  • Timothy W. Vs. Rochester, N.H. School District

    This case enforced the principle of Zero Reject. This means that school districts cannot ignore FAPE regulations despite any feelings about the child's abilities.
  • IDEA

    Once called the EAHC, the IDEA, or Inviduals with Disibilities Education Act was enacted to make sure that all children with disabilities have the opportunity to receive a free an appropriate education.
  • ADA

    The ADA, or Americans with Disabilities Act, is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in places outside of school, like employment opportunities, transportation etc.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    The No Child Left Behind Act was established by President George Bush and established high standards for schools and set measurable goals for students to achieve. If these standards were met, schools receieve their federal funding.
  • Scaffer Vs. Weast

    This case came to the decision that if someone wishes to argue against an IEP plan, they must indeed present how it is damaging to the student.
  • Waviers for NCLB

    President Obama declared that states may request waviers for flexibility in meeting some of the requirements of the NCLB Act.
