     The Vineland Training School in New Jersey
    The Vineland Training School in New Jersey was founded in 1904 and it is a nonprofit organization. The goal of this school is to educate individuals with developmental disabilities in order to allow them to become independent. The original name of this school was The New Jersey Home for the Education and Care of Feeble-minded Children which was established in 1888.

    The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) was founded in 1922 and is a nonprofit national professional organization aimed at advocacy for individuals with disabilities.   • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This court case was based on Linda Brown and African American student that was not allowed to enter a segregated school. Her father decided to go to the district court to fight against Topeka, Kansas school board. They won the case and it was ruled out that segregation was not equal. This case also shed light on the importance of allowing special need students to be educated with general education students too.

    The Association for Children with Learning Disabilities was created by a group of parent advocates in 1963.     First Center for Independent Living
    The first center for independent living was established in Berkley, California by Ed Roberts. Ed Roberts was a disability activist and decided to establish this center so individuals with disabilities can live independently and away from institutions. This center provides peer support and role modeling and the center is managed and run by individuals with disabilities.

    The Rehabilitation Act was passed by Congress in order to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. It became the first civil rights law to protect their rights and prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities when applying to programs to receive federal financial assistance.

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act Public Law 94-142 outlined the rights at educational programs and opportunities students with disabilities can receive. Prior to this law, many students with disabilities were not receiving an appropriate education based on individual needs. There were also not many programs available and students would be excluded at public schools.

    The Individual with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 was a reauthorization of the original IDEA signed by President Bush. This act emphasizes the importance of increased student accountability and performance within the classroom, school, and district school level. Students with disabilities are also to be included in statewide standardized assessments. This act also empathizes the importance of having highly qualified special education teachers and changes to IEP, due process.
