Spanish American War timeline

  • Cuban revolution is launched

    Jose Marti launched a revolution against Spain. Their goal was to make Cuba independent.
  • Spanish responds to revolt

    Spain sends General Valeriano Weyler to restore order. He did so by creating concentration camps.
  • The De Lome Letter is published

    New York Journal published a private letter written by Enrique Dupuy de Lome, stating that he thought McKinley was weak and "a bidder for the admiration of the crowd."
  • USS Maine Explodes

    Mckinley ordered the USS Maine to Cuba to bring home Americans from the dangers of fighting and to protect property. The ship exploded in the harbor.
  • Spain agrees to United States demand

    The Spanish government agreed to everything the U.S. demanded, including a six-month cease-fire.
  • Mckinley asks congress for authority to use force.

    Due to the public opinion, McKinley was granted the right to use force against Spain, just over a week after the treaty was signed.
  • War is declared

    The United States declared war against Spain.
  • American forces land in Cuba

    American forces land to avenge the U.S.S. Maine.
  • Battle of Kettle Hill

    American troops invaded just out side of Santiago, on Kettle Hill. This lead the Americans to a second victory in Cuba.
  • US invades Puerto Rico

  • Cease-fire

    Spanish-American War ends.
  • Treaty of Paris signed

    Puerto Rico and Guam are now US Territory, and they sold the Philippines for 20 million.
  • Annexation of Guam, PR, and Philippines
