U.S attempt to purchase Cuba
America saw and had interest in cuba. At this time Spain had control over it and and spain didn't like Cuba. In 1868-1878 Cuba went to battle with Spain. Eventually Cuba lost but America still had interest. When Cuba went to Spain to get money for seeds and harvest Spain didn’t cough it up. They went to America and was granted. -
The yellow press begun to shape American public opinion with respect to the civil war.

Cuba’s first war of independence.
Throughout the 1850s and into the 1860s, Cuban planters and business owners demanded fundamental social and economic reforms from Spain, which ruled the colony. The United States assisted in war to protect its citizens and businesses in Cuba.The United States declared war on Spain after the U.S. warship, the Maine, exploded and sank on February 15, 1898 while visiting Havana, Cuba. It’s now known as the 10 year war. -
Valeriano Weyler was sent to Cuba by Spain 1898
He was a Lieutenant in the cuban army, then later promoted to a General. He soon figured out that in order to free Cuba from spain he would have to separate the rebels from civilians. So he needed to go to Cuba to help out. -
Publication of the De Lome letter - February 9, 1898
In 1897 William McKinley became president. At this time in history McKinley was preventing war with Spain as much as possible. He succeeded and Spain called back General Weyler, let Cuba limet self-government, and many other things. In February 9, 1898 the Spanish minister Enrique Dupuy de Lôme wrote a privat letter back to his boss. The letter was then put on a ship to Spain. While the letter was being transported the ship had to make a pit stop at Havana to get goods. -
Explosion of the USS MAINE - February 15th, 1898
Six days after the publication of the Dupuy de Lôme letter America was furious with Spain. WHile this all was happening there were still Americans in Cuba. President McKinley decided that a ship should go over there and pick them up. The U.S. sent over the U.S.S. Maine was on its way on the 15th of February. The ship was docked at the harbor in Havana and later blown up. There was approximately 260 people killed in the explosion. -
Jose Marti is the leader of Cuba - 1895
He became leader of Cuba. He had a huge influence on the people and lead Cuba in battles. He died in one of the first battles that Cuba had so they needed a new leader. However, he was the most popular. -
U.S. Declares war on Spain - On April 25, 1898
The United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. As a result Spain lost its control over the remains of its overseas empire -- Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines Islands, Guam, and other islands.
