    The Spanish sent the butcher, Veleriano Weyler, to put down the insurrection. He wanted to prevent insurrectos from leading the population under Spanish rule. He then built camps to imprison a large portion of the population.

    This was a letter by a Spanish Ambassador named Enrique Dupuy de Lômeto sent to the U.S. It was criticizing William Mckinley (current president) and was calling him weak and that he was only there to please the crowd. It was released and published by a New York Journal owner and him doing that helped abrupt the United states warlike foreign policy.

    The U.S.S. Maine was a U.S navy ship that was riding near the Havana Harbor and was suddenly blown up which tore the bottom of the ship and left it to sink. It killed 260 officers and men on board and supposedly blown up by a mine.

    President Mckinley asked congress for their approval to start the fighting between the Spanish and Americans. With so many conflicts, he wanted to make sure Cubans get their independence He also made sure to add that any Cuban or U.S citizens on the island would have a stable government and have their peace and safety.

    The U.S wanted to capture Spanish-held Santiago De Cuba on the southern coast of Cuba. It was one of the final wars in the Spanish-American War and led to an American victory. It led directly to a surrender of Santiago on July 17.
