    Sputnik 2 The USSR launched Sputnik 2 shortly after Sputnik 1. Sputnik 2 was known as the first biological spacecraft as it carried a dog, Laika, into space to study the effects of space on an organism. Although provide with enough oxygen for 10 days, Laika died after only a day or two due to thermal problems.
  • Apollo 8

    Apollo 8
    Apollo 8 Apollo 8 was launched by NASA (US) commanded by Frank Borman, with WIllaim Andres and Jim Lovell. The purpose of Apollo 8 was to orbit the moon. On Christmas Eve, Andres snapped the Earthrise photo, which is one of the most iconic images of the Earth from space.

    Apollo 13 Facts One of NASA's biggest disasters, Apollo 13's initial mission was to explore the Fra Maura regaion on the moon. During a routine procedure, exposed wires in the oxygen tank created an explosion. Commander Jim Lovell notified Earth using the famous line "Houston, we've had a problem". Also onboard was Jack Swigert and Fred Haise. All three astronauts successfully made it home after a long few days in space.

    NASA Cassin-Huygen's Mission NASA launched the Cassini-Huygens mission in October of 1997. Together with the European Space Agency, the probe was sent to study Titan, the largest of Saturn's moons. It lcurrently orbiting Saturn to take images and study the ringed-planet in more detail.

    LADEE
    NASA LADEE One of the most recent missions launched by NASA, LADEE is a probe sent to study the moon's atmosphere. In order to obtain low altitude data, the probe was set to impact the moon's surface. April 17, 2014 marked the end of LADEE's mission when it impacted the moon.
