    The arrival of the Dutch
    On the 6th of April 1652, Jan van Riebeeck and his crew that consisted of 82 men and 8 women arrived Cape Town. Their aim was to establish a refreshment station for ships passing by, Fort of Good Hope. Instead they settled, and today there's approximately 1.5 million "Boers" in South Africa.

    The second Anglo-Boer war was fought from October 11, 1899, to May 31, 1902, between Great Britain and the two Boer republics, the South African republic and the Orange Free State. It resulted in British victory.

  • Mandela was imprisoned

    Mandela was imprisoned
    Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment in a prison called Robben Island.
  • Nelson Mandela elected as president

    Four years after being released from prison, Mandela was elected president of South Africa. This was the first non-racial elections and the ANC won. Government of National Unity was formed and the Commonwealth was restored. After a 20 year absence, Sotha Africa once again takes seat in UN General Assembly. This was the ending of Apartheid and is considered the greatest year in South African history.

    South Africa hosted the World Cup football tournament. The Southa Arfican football player Tshabalala scored the first goal of the tournament against Mexico. Vuvuzela is an instrument that makes kind of an annoying noise. Together all the fans created an incredible atmosphere with Vuvuzelas.

    At the age of 95 Nelson Mandela died. Tributes to "the father of the nation" flood in from throughout the world.
